Prime Minister Robert Abela inaugurated a €14 million breakwater and ferry terminal in Buġibba, marking a major investment in Malta’s domestic sea transport.
The Prime Minister also announced an upcoming tender for a new sea transport service linking Tas-Sliema, Buġibba, and Mġarr (Gozo), with free ferry service planned between Buġibba and Tas-Sliema.
The breakwater, built by Infrastructure Malta, stretches 180 metres and includes a 36-metre arm for added shelter. It protects moored fishing boats and small vessels from rough sea conditions. The site includes a modern terminal with sheltered passenger areas.
Dr Abela highlighted that capital investment is projected to exceed €1 billion this year—double the figure under previous administrations. He credited EU funds for supporting transformative infrastructure projects that improve citizens’ daily lives.
Minister Chris Bonett described the project as part of a broader vision for multi-modal transport, integrating sea and land mobility. The new Buġibba terminal will support fast ferry operations between Sliema and Gozo, aiming to ease travel and reduce road traffic.
Minister Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi explained that the project is part of the SMITHS programme, which uses EU funding to invest in sustainable transport solutions across Malta and Gozo.
