Over the last seven years, Malta has seen direct investment exceeding €33 million channeled to sports associations across the country. This was announced by the Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation, Clifton Grima, during the official transition from SportMalta On the Move to the new initiative Let’s Move Malta.
Minister Grima emphasized that this investment is not only in sports infrastructure but also directly in athletes, associations, and sports organizations. “This year alone, nearly €5.5 million have been allocated to a record 51 sports associations,” he noted.
The financial support is distributed through various SportMalta assistance schemes, such as the International Participation Scheme and the Sport Tourism Scheme. Associations also benefit from subsidized land leases, and collaboration with the Malta Olympic Committee, Special Olympics Malta, and the Paralympic Committee. Additionally, athletes enjoy benefits such as flexi-training, paid sports leave, and the Sponsorship Rebate Scheme.
“This financial assistance allows sports associations to operate more flexibly and continue advancing various sports disciplines—not only through facility improvements but also direct investment in athletes,” added Minister Grima. “We’re seeing Malta’s name mentioned more frequently on the international stage through remarkable achievements.”
The transition from On the Move to Let’s Move Malta reflects SportMalta’s ongoing commitment to expanding access to physical activity and encouraging healthier lifestyles within the community. Following the success of Summer on the Move 2025, which attracted more than 3,000 participants across Malta and Gozo, this new initiative aims to enhance accessibility, diversity, and quality in community sports programs.
As part of this new phase, SportMalta is introducing:
Extended Sport Fundamentals sessions (now 90 minutes instead of 60) to help children strengthen physical literacy, motor skills, and confidence.
A Parents and Toddlers program for ages 2.5 to 3 years, spanning 22 weeks, focusing on joint participation in land- and water-based activities to build coordination, agility, and balance.
A Teen Adventure program for ages 12–16, a 28-week initiative combining outdoor challenges, sports, and practical life skills such as first aid and water safety—aimed at building teamwork and resilience.
SportMalta Hubs, created in collaboration with sports associations and clubs, promoting inclusion and guiding participants toward ongoing sports engagement.
SportMalta CEO Mark Cutajar reiterated that Let’s Move Malta reinforces SportMalta’s long-term vision for developing Malta’s sports sector.
