Minister Schembri announces €400,000 investment to make coding accessible for all

During a press conference addressed by the Minister for the Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects, Silvio Schembri, the EU Code Week 2025 was officially launched. This Europe-wide initiative encourages and promotes coding as an essential part of digital life for every Maltese and Gozitan citizen.

Minister Schembri highlighted Malta’s remarkable progress in becoming a more digital, connected, and innovative society.
He said, “Last June, according to the Digital Decade Report published by the European Commission, Malta achieved a 96% level of digital proficiency — far above the European average.”

As part of a new national initiative, two new schemes were announced:

  1. Boost Your Coding Scheme – Offering €1,000 financial assistance for anyone aged 16 or older to attend basic coding courses. This €400,000 investment will make coding more accessible than ever before.

  2. Minecraft Education Challenge Malta Competition – Engaging primary and secondary school students through Minecraft Education to learn coding and develop innovative concepts collaboratively.

Minister Schembri thanked the MDIA for leading this initiative, along with Microsoft (publishers of Minecraft) and Gaming Malta for their continued support.

Kenneth Brincat, CEO of the MDIA, stated that the authority remains committed to promoting digital lifestyles and supporting careers with quality jobs in the technology sector.
“We are ready to continue reinforcing Europe’s digital transformation and ensure our education system is prepared for the future — towards a truly digital Malta,” he said.

The EU Code Week 2025 initiative is another step in shaping Malta’s digital future, in full alignment with the Malta Vision 2050 strategy.
