Dr Lydia Abela has launched the sixth edition of ‘Rigal bi Mħabba’ at Pjazza Kastilja — an initiative aimed at supporting vulnerable children so every child receives a Christmas gift filled with love from the people of Malta and Gozo.
The event featured a performance by the La Voix Harmonies choir, which each year prepares a special song promoting hope and solidarity.
Dr Abela explained that the initiative started from a simple dream she shared with her daughter Giorgia-Mae, and has grown into a national movement uniting thousands of people to bring joy to vulnerable children. She emphasised that while many families celebrate Christmas in comfort, others face difficult circumstances.
Gifts may be placed under the Christmas tree at Pjazza Kastilja between 12 and 19 December. From 15 to 24 December, the square will transform into a Christmas Village offering family activities, traditional food and drink, and local artisan crafts.
The closing event will take place on 19 December, featuring day-long activities, including a musical performance by local artists and a concert by the Armed Forces of Malta Band.
Dr Abela also thanked local councils and schools for their involvement, highlighting her visit to Ġużeppina Deguara Primary School, where children prepared gifts together with their teachers.
She announced the return of ‘Rigal bi Mħabba b’Differenza’, supporting animals, which this year will also extend to Gozo. Dr Abela concluded by thanking the Ministry for Social Policy and Children’s Rights and all disciplinary forces supporting the initiative.
