Prime Minister launches Vision Malta 2050: “The time has come for our country’s destiny to be written and lived at its best”

At Tritons’ Square, Prime Minister Robert Abela officially launched Vision Malta 2050. Describing it as a promise made by the entire nation, he stated, “A promise that we will do our very best to be the best we can be.” He emphasized that Vision Malta 2050 is shaped by everyone and will remain relevant throughout the years.

“The time has come for a new era of achievement... The time has come for our country’s destiny to be written, and for us to begin living it at its very best, for ourselves and for our children,” said Prime Minister Robert Abela.

Dr. Abela reiterated that this plan for the next 24 years is the result of studies and wide consultation, turning future challenges into foundations for success. He stressed that with the world changing rapidly, planning solely on a five-year political cycle is insufficient; a comprehensive long-term plan is required.

Vision Malta 2050 is based on one mission, four pillars, three goals, and 100 measures. The mission is to create a safe, resilient nation, promoting a healthy quality of life for everyone. The four pillars focus on sustainable growth, accessible public services, a resilient nation with modern education, and smarter use of land and sea.

The Prime Minister outlined three key indicators to measure success:

  1. UN Human Development Index: Aiming to be in the top 20 by 2035 and top 10 globally by 2050.

  2. EU Median Disposable Income Index: Aiming to match France by 2035 and reach Finland's level by 2050.

  3. EU Overall Experience of Life: Aiming for the top 8 in the EU by 2035 and top 5 by 2050.

Six flagship projects were announced: efficient transport systems, strengthening health, education for the future, clean energy & climate action, a greener Malta with national parks, and port regeneration. Implementation will be tracked on maltavision.mt.

Minister Silvio Schembri also addressed the launch, stating that this is a bold choice to protect tomorrow’s quality of life by investing in excellence today. The event featured participation from successful Maltese figures including Haley Bugeja, Neil Agius, and Ira Losco.
