The regeneration of Wied Speranza in Mosta is currently underway, with the objective of transforming it into a safe, accessible, and environmentally preserved public space. This initiative is being led by the Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness and the Ministry for European Funds and the Implementation of the Electoral Programme, in collaboration with Project Green and the Mosta Local Council.

Once completed, the project will connect Wied Speranza with the neighbouring valleys of Wied il-Għasel and Wied il-Qlejgħa, thus creating a continuous green corridor that enhances mobility, encourages eco-tourism, and provides the public with greater opportunities to engage with nature in a secure and sustainable environment.

Current works include the careful removal of invasive species that threaten the ecological balance of the valley, followed by the planting of native flora to strengthen local biodiversity. Restoration efforts also involve the reconstruction of traditional rubble walls (ħitan tas-sejjieħ) and the installation of coir logs made from biodegradable materials. These measures are intended to level pedestrian pathways while preventing soil erosion and preserving the natural landscape.

Named after the historic 1760 chapel “Madonna tal-Isperanza,” Wied Speranza holds significant cultural and environmental value. According to legend, a miraculous event occurred in the valley when a young girl was saved from pirates—an enduring symbol of hope for the community.

This important environmental and cultural project is being co-financed by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD), highlighting the effective use of EU funds to enhance Malta’s rural heritage while promoting sustainability and inclusivity.
