Your Health, Our Commitment: Masterplans announced for Gozo General Hospital, St Luke’s Hospital, and Boffa Hospital The Masterplan for the regeneration of main hospitals in Malta and Gozo has been announced.

Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela announced the Masterplan that will lead to the development of a new hospital at the Gozo General Hospital site, the renovation and expansion of St Luke’s Hospital, and the renovation of Boffa Hospital.

The Government is moving forward with a long-term vision to transform the Gozo General Hospital into a modern and resilient healthcare campus serving the needs of the Gozitan and Maltese people. At the same time, the regeneration project of St Luke’s Hospital into a modern health village will be one of the largest long-term investments in Malta's public health infrastructure, spanning over 15 years.

The Healthcare Campus Masterplan exercise has now been concluded, and the project is entering the next phase of design development and the preparation of calls for tenders necessary for implementation. The study analysed the demographics and future health needs in Malta and Gozo, identified gaps in existing services, and defined the requirements for the future.

Minister Jo Etienne Abela explained that over the past months, technical studies, geotechnical investigations, health service planning, and the drafting of the campus Masterplan were carried out, collectively forming the foundation of this national project. Meanwhile, preparatory works have already begun to relocate the northern part of the campus to make way for the construction of the new hospital. Among the permanent infrastructure currently at an advanced stage is the new helipad, which is expected to begin operating in the third quarter of this year.

Dr Abela explained that this project aims to increase hospital capacity, introduce new specialised services, strengthen emergency preparedness, reduce waiting times, and bring more quality healthcare closer to the Gozitan community. "The Government remains committed to continuing to build health systems that serve patients excellently. We are committed to ensuring our systems are ready for the future," concluded Dr Abela.

Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg thanked the Ministry for Health, the administration of these hospitals, and the local and international experts involved for wisely drafting a feasible plan that acknowledges the circumstances of past years and resolutely looks forward to offering solutions for the future health needs of patients in Malta and Gozo.

"I note with satisfaction that the first phases of this plan are already being implemented, both at the Gozo Hospital and at St Luke’s and Karin Grech Hospitals in Malta. At the same time, it is far more important that year after year, the Government tangibly strives to improve the quality of health services that patients receive from our current hospitals, providing better conditions for our dedicated workers in this sector, new equipment, and an ever-growing range of medical services, both in Malta and in Gozo," stated Dr Borg.
