Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg meets University students during Council of Europe event
Ian Borg encourages youth to raise their voices for democracy during Malta’s Council of Europe Presidency event.
Valletta, 8 October 2025 – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Ian Borg urged University of Malta students to actively participate in shaping future policies during a lecture held as part of European Voices: Conversations on Campus, organised under Malta’s Presidency of the Council of Europe.
Dr Borg emphasised that democracy thrives when young people take an active role in building inclusive communities. He noted that empowering youth remains a key national priority, ensuring they have a real voice in decision-making.
The event also featured the Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset and PACE President Theodoros Rousopoulos, who discussed global issues with students. Dr Borg welcomed European ministers responsible for youth, attending a conference in Valletta focused on democratic participation.
He highlighted Malta’s leadership role in international cooperation, referring to its presidency of the OSCE and the appointment of the first-ever Maltese UN Special Representative for children in armed conflict.
“Malta continues to prove that young people can lead and contribute meaningfully to democracy,” Dr Borg said.
