Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg Meets Palestinian Ambassador Fadi Hanania Ian Borg meets Palestinian Ambassador to discuss Malta’s recognition of Palestine and peace efforts.

Swieqi, 17 October 2025 — Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Ian Borg met with the Palestinian Ambassador to Malta, Fadi Hanania, at the Embassy of the State of Palestine in Swieqi.

The meeting centred on Malta’s recent official recognition of the State of Palestine, announced in September, and the latest developments in the Middle East — including the Gaza Peace Plan agreement reached with the support of Egypt, Qatar and the United States during the Sharm el-Sheikh Conference earlier this month.

Dr Borg underlined that Malta’s decision to recognise Palestine during the United Nations General Assembly reaffirms the country’s longstanding commitment to a just and lasting peace between Israel and Palestine, based on the Two-State Solution, with Jerusalem as the capital of both states living side by side.

He also reiterated Malta’s ongoing support for the Palestinian people through humanitarian aid, educational opportunities for youth, and medical evacuation and care for children injured in Gaza. Dr Borg urged all parties, including the international community, to work together on implementing the Gaza Peace Plan and ensuring that the ceasefire is respected.

Ambassador Hanania thanked Dr Borg for Malta’s continued diplomatic and humanitarian engagement in support of Palestine. He called for increased humanitarian assistance to Gaza, the start of reconstruction efforts, and stronger international backing for Palestinian communities in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

He also appealed for an end to illegal settlement building, the release of Palestinian prisoners, and the removal of restrictions on movement.
