Abdullah Tariq: “Learning Maltese Helped Me Feel Part of Society” Abdullah Tariq says learning Maltese helped him feel part of local society.

Valletta, 14 October 2025 — At 27 years old, Abdullah Tariq, originally from Pakistan, has been living in Malta for almost two years. In that time, he has not only found a new home but has also become an active member of the local community — largely thanks to his determination to learn the Maltese language on his own.

“I learned Maltese from my colleagues, patients, and even through YouTube. I feel like part of society now. It’s especially important in healthcare or hospitality — knowing the language makes things easier both for you and for the clients,” Abdullah said.

Before moving to Malta, third-country nationals are encouraged to take courses on Maltese language and culture — something Abdullah fully supports, describing it as “a good idea that helps newcomers understand the country, its culture, and how the system works.”

Despite his strong efforts to integrate, Abdullah admits that life is not always free from challenges.

“Sometimes there are problems or a lack of respect towards us. Enforcement could be better in some cases. But for the most part, my life here is good. Malta is a beautiful country, and the people have kind hearts,” he shared.

Abdullah says he is deeply grateful to the Maltese people who welcomed him with open arms. He hopes to continue improving his Maltese and learning more about the country he now proudly calls home.
