Alcohol consumption remains stable while tobacco use continues to decline Launch of the General Population Survey on Alcohol, Tobacco and Drug Use 2023

The General Population Survey on Alcohol, Tobacco and Drug Use in Malta 2023 has been published, providing an overview of substance use among Maltese residents aged 18 to 65. Around 3,400 questionnaires were completed, offering a representative snapshot of consumption patterns and long-term trends.

Findings show that alcohol consumption remains widespread, with a slight increase observed among women, while overall monthly consumption remains stable. A notable proportion of drinkers display patterns associated with risky alcohol use.

Tobacco use continues to decline, with fewer adults smoking compared to previous years and a narrowing gap between male and female smokers. Cannabis use remains more prevalent among young adults, particularly those aged 18 to 24.

Minister for Social Policy and Children’s Rights Michael Falzon stated that the Ministry is strengthening prevention efforts in line with the National Drug Policy 2023, including work to establish a Prevention Coordination Body.

Head of the National Focal Point (NDAU) Manuel Gellel highlighted the need for further action on alcohol consumption and confirmed that a renewed National Alcohol Policy is being prepared to safeguard public health and promote wellbeing.
